Senior or Specialist Worker Visa: What Birmingham's Manufacturing Sector Needs to Know

Birmingham’s manufacturing base, from automotive engineering in Longbridge to advanced materials and precision tooling across the wider West Midlands, relies heavily on specialist expertise that isn’t always available locally. When a multinational manufacturer needs to bring an experienced engineer, plant manager or technical specialist from an overseas branch into its Birmingham operation, the Senior or Specialist Worker visa is usually the route that fits.

Our team at Birmingham Immigration Lawyers can talk you through how the visa works, who qualifies, what it costs, and how it compares with other routes such as the Skilled Worker visa. Call us on 0121 667 6530 or reach to us online to discuss your situation.

    Overview

The Senior or Specialist Worker visa sits within the Global Business Mobility visa framework and replaced the Intra-Company Transfer visa in 2022.

It allows an employee already working for a multinational company overseas to transfer into that company’s UK branch, provided the role and salary meet Home Office requirements.

For manufacturing employers in Birmingham, this route matters because it does not require recruiting workers from the open market. It is built specifically for internal transfers, which makes it a natural fit for global manufacturing groups moving specialist engineers, production leads or technical managers into a UK facility.

What Is the Senior or Specialist Worker Visa?

    Overview

The Senior or Specialist Worker visa allows an existing employee of an international company to come to or remain in the UK to perform an eligible job at that company’s UK branch.

It is part of the Global Business Mobility visa pathway, which also includes routes for graduate trainees, secondments and UK expansion workers.

This is not an open recruitment visa, as the applicant must already be employed by the sponsoring organisation and working overseas before the transfer takes place.

This is what separates it from the Skilled Worker visa, which is used to sponsor someone hired directly into a UK role, often from outside the existing workforce.

For a Birmingham manufacturer that is part of an international group, perhaps with a parent company or sister plant in Germany, India, the US or elsewhere, this route offers a direct way to move a trusted, already-trained specialist into the UK operation without having to run a fresh recruitment process.

What Does the Senior or Specialist Worker Visa Allow?

    Visa holders can:

    • work for their sponsor in the specific role listed on their certificate of sponsorship
    • study alongside their employment
    • bring a partner and children as dependants, provided they meet the requirements
    • travel abroad and return to the UK freely
    • carry out voluntary work, provided it’s unpaid and for a registered charity, voluntary organisation, fundraising body or statutory body

They cannot claim most public funds or benefits, change employer or job role without formally updating their visa, take on a second job (unless they previously held an Intra-Company Transfer visa or Tier 2 Intra-Company Transfer Long-term Staff visa), or apply to settle permanently in the UK directly through this route.

Who Can Sponsor a Senior or Specialist Worker?

Only organisations holding a valid Home Office sponsor licence for this route can sponsor a Senior or Specialist Worker. For a manufacturing business, this usually means the UK branch, subsidiary or linked entity of the same corporate group the applicant already works for overseas.

If your Birmingham operation does not hold a sponsor licence, that is the first step before any individual visa application can proceed.

The sponsor is responsible for issuing the certificate of sponsorship, confirming the role and salary, and maintaining compliance with sponsor duties throughout the employee’s stay, including reporting any changes to the Home Office.

Senior or Specialist Worker Visa Requirements

    To qualify, an applicant must:

    • hold a valid certificate of sponsorship from an approved employer
    • have worked for that employer outside the UK, for at least 12 months if they’ll be paid under £73,900 a year, or with no minimum service requirement if they’ll be paid £73,900 or more
    • be taking up a role listed on the Home Office’s eligible occupations list, identified by its four-digit occupation code
    • be paid at least £52,500 a year, or the specific “going rate” set for their occupation code, whichever figure is higher

The prior-employment requirement is one of the areas manufacturing employers most commonly trip up on. A specialist who has only recently joined the overseas parent company and has not yet reached 12 months of service would not be eligible unless their salary clears the required threshold. This is worth checking early, particularly for fast-growing engineering teams where staff move between entities relatively quickly.

Many manufacturing and engineering occupation codes, including production and process engineering, mechanical and electrical engineering roles, and various specialist technical management positions, do appear on the eligible occupations list, but it’s essential to confirm the exact code and going rate for the specific role before proceeding, since going rates vary significantly by occupation.

Senior or Specialist Worker Sponsor Requirements

Sponsoring a Senior or Specialist Worker carries ongoing obligations, not just a one-off application. The sponsoring business must:

    • hold and maintain a valid sponsor licence covering this route
    • issue an accurate certificate of sponsorship describing the genuine role, salary and duration of the assignment
    • keep records of the worker’s right to work, contact details and any changes to their employment
    • report significant changes to the Home Office, such as a change in job role, salary, or if the worker’s employment ends early
    • confirm, where relevant, whether the sponsor is certifying maintenance funds on the worker’s behalf

For a manufacturing group transferring staff regularly between international sites, it’s worth building sponsor licence compliance into your HR processes from the outset, since breaches can put the licence, and therefore future transfers, at risk.

Apply for the Senior or Specialist Worker Visa

Applicants will typically need the following supporting documents:

    • their certificate of sponsorship reference number
    • a valid passport or other travel document
    • proof of their relationship with the sponsoring employer and evidence of the required period of overseas employment
    • evidence of sufficient personal savings, unless the sponsor is certifying maintenance or the applicant has held a UK visa for 12 months or more
    • proof of knowledge of English is not required for this route, unlike some other work visa categories, which can simplify the process for technical specialists

Any documents not already in English need certified translations.

Processing Times for the Senior or Specialist Worker Visa

Applicants outside the UK usually receive a decision within 3 weeks. Those applying from within the UK to extend, switch, or update a visa usually wait about 8 weeks.

Faster decision services are available at an additional cost for those who need to plan a start date with more certainty, which can matter for manufacturing teams working to production or project deadlines.

Applications can be submitted up to 3 months before the intended UK start date, and must be made within 3 months of the certificate of sponsorship being issued.

Switching to the Senior or Specialist Worker Visa

Workers already in the UK on an Intra-Company Transfer visa or a Tier 2 Intra-Company Transfer Long-term Staff visa can apply to extend their stay under this route.

Switching from most other visa categories to the Senior or Specialist Worker route from inside the UK is generally not permitted, since it’s designed for workers coming in specifically for an intra-company transfer rather than for switching from an unrelated visa type.

Senior or Specialist Worker Visa Costs

The costs of the visa are:

Application fee, if applying from outside the UK:

      • £819 per person for stays of up to 3 years
      • £1,618 per person for stays of more than 3 years

Application fee, if applying from inside the UK to extend, switch or update:

      • £943 per person for stays of up to 3 years
      • £1,865 per person for stays of more than 3 years

On top of this, applicants must pay the Immigration Health Surcharge, usually £1035 per year of stay, and show at least £1,270 in savings held for 28 consecutive days, unless the sponsor certifies maintenance or the applicant has already been lawfully in the UK for 12 months or more.

Partners and children applying as dependants face separate fees and savings requirements of their own.

Can Dependants Join Senior or Specialist Workers?

Partners and children can apply to join a Senior or Specialist Worker as dependants, or apply at the same time as the main applicant.

Each dependent needs to meet their own eligibility and financial requirements, including proof they can support themselves, and each pays a separate application fee and healthcare surcharge.

For manufacturing specialists relocating with family, this is often one of the more significant cost and planning considerations, and it’s worth factoring dependent fees into the total budget for a transfer from the outset rather than treating them as an afterthought.

      Visa Duration and Extensions

A Senior or Specialist Worker visa is initially granted for whichever is shorter: the time stated on the certificate of sponsorship plus 14 days, or 5 years.

There is an overall cap on how long someone can remain in the UK across these and related Global Business Mobility categories:

      • 5 years in any 6-year period for those paid less than £73,900 a year
      • 9 years in any 10-year period for those paid £73,900 a year or more

Workers can extend or reapply as many times as needed up to that maximum. Time spent on related routes, including the Intra-Company Transfer visa, Graduate Trainee visa, Secondment Worker visa, Service Supplier visa and UK Expansion Worker visa, all count towards the same overall limit.

Anyone who held a Tier 2 Intra-Company Transfer Long-term Staff visa before 6 April 2011 and has remained in the UK continuously since is not subject to this cap.

Senior or Specialist Worker Visa vs Skilled Worker Visa

Manufacturing employers weighing up how to bring in overseas expertise often need to choose between the Senior or Specialist Worker visa and the Skilled Worker visa, and the two serve genuinely different purposes.

The Senior or Specialist Worker visa is built for internal transfers. The worker must already be employed by the sponsoring company overseas, and in most cases, for at least 12 months. It sits under the Global Business Mobility framework and, on its own, does not lead directly to settlement in the UK.

The Skilled Worker visa, by contrast, is for hiring someone into a UK role, whether they’re an existing overseas employee or a completely new hire. It uses a points-based assessment covering salary, job offer, and skill level, and it leads to a standard route to settlement after 5 years of continuous residence.

For a Birmingham manufacturer with an established international group structure, the Senior or Specialist Worker visa is often the faster, more natural fit for moving a known specialist into the UK branch.

Where the goal is a longer-term UK settlement for that individual, or where the worker does not meet the 12-month overseas employment requirement, the Skilled Worker visa may be the better route, and it’s worth taking advice on which category best matches both the business need and the individual’s long-term plans.

What About Settlement? The ILR 10-Year Route

One of the most common questions we hear from manufacturing employers relates to settlement. The Senior or Specialist Worker visa does not, by itself, lead to Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR). However, time spent on this visa can potentially count towards the separate 10-year long residence route to ILR, provided the worker accumulates 10 years of continuous, lawful UK residence, which can be built up across different visa categories rather than a single route.

This long residence pathway currently requires absences to stay within 180 days in any rolling 12-month period, alongside meeting the English language and Life in the UK test requirements that apply to most settlement applications.

The government has proposed significant reform to the wider settlement system, with a consultation on a new “Earned Settlement” framework running from November 2025 to February 2026.

These proposals could change how the 10-year-long residence route operates, or replace it with a different qualifying structure, though nothing has been confirmed or implemented as of the time of writing.

Any specialist worker or employer planning a long-term UK settlement strategy should monitor developments, as the position may shift before the 10-year mark is reached.

                Frequently Asked Questions

Sponsoring a Senior or Specialist Worker requires the applicant to already be an employee of the sponsor’s overseas business, generally for at least 12 months. Sponsoring a Skilled Worker doesn’t carry this prior employment requirement, and is used for direct hires into a UK role regardless of where the applicant currently works.

Yes, provided they remain within the overall cap of 5 years in any 6-year period, or 9 years in any 10-year period for those paid £73,900 or more. Extensions can be applied for as many times as needed within that limit.

The most frequent issues involve an occupation code and salary that don’t clear the going rate, incomplete evidence of the required 12 months of overseas employment, and missing the 3-month application window after the certificate of sponsorship is issued.

ILR removes time restrictions entirely, allowing indefinite residence and work in the UK without needing to extend or renew a visa. Since the Senior or Specialist Worker visa doesn’t lead directly to ILR, workers hoping to settle permanently usually need to plan around the 10-year long residence route or consider switching to a settlement-track visa such as the Skilled Worker visa.

It gives manufacturing employers a direct route to bring proven specialists from overseas branches into a Birmingham facility, which can be especially valuable for quickly filling technical gaps. Where a business wants to build a longer-term UK presence for a given specialist, though, it’s worth planning early around settlement options rather than relying on this route alone.
