Your immigration status
You may be asked to view or prove your immigration status of settlement in the UK, you can do so by viewing your settled status or pre settled status online.
There may be instances where you are required to prove your immigration status, for example: to accommodate the requirements of a new employers check.
The process of checking your settled status is simple and straightforward, the online checking system from the government website allows an individual to do the following:
- Access a ‘share code’ which allows you to prove your status of settlement to others (a new employer)
- Update any personal details in your UK visas and Immigration account, for example, your passport number or updated email address and telephone number
- Check the rights you are entitled to in the UK during your settlement period or find out how you can claim benefits if you are eligible

What is settled status?
Settled status allows an individual to live and work in the UK free of immigration control, often for an unlimited period of time.
Settled status is an umbrella term for various routes to settlement in the UK used by the UK visas and Immigration Services to determine somebodies immigration status within the United Kingdom. The most common forms of settled status in the UK include Indefinite Leave to Remain, EU settled status (EU Settlement Scheme), and Permanent Residence.
Indefinite Leave to Remain
Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) is a form of settlement that allows a foreign national to stay in the UK for an unlimited period of time completely free of immigration control. ILR is available to both Non-EU and EU nationals provided that they meet the minimum stay requirements for the UK visa they accessed to enter the United Kingdom. Typically, a person must have continuous lawful residence in the UK for 5 or ten years, however, this will vary based on different UK visa types. It is also important that an ILR applicant has not been out of the UK for a period of more than 180 days at any given time.
EU Settlement scheme
The settlement scheme allows EU nationals to settle in the UK to live and work free of immigration control. The EUSS was launched a few years ago when free movement ceased due to Brexit. The scheme has since closed its applications to EU citizens.
Permanent residence status is a dated scheme that allowed eligible foreign nationals to reside in the UK free of immigration control provided that they could prove they had been working, looking for work, or, were self-employed in the UK for at least 5 years continuously.
The Permanent Residence card expired in 2020, with the government encouraging people to apply under the EU Settlement Scheme (EUSS) instead.
Who can check someone’s Immigration status?
It may be necessary to check someone’s immigration status for many reasons, so it is important to know who is able to check on a settled status online.
You can check someone’s immigration status using the online checking services if:
- You have settled or pre-settled status
- Have applied for a UK visa and use the UK Immigration: ID Check app to scan your identity document into your mobile phone
It is important to note that you are not able to use the online checking services if you are in receipt of a vignette in your current passport or if you have a Biometric Residence Permit as proof of your immigration status.
How to view or prove your immigration status online
In order to use the online checking services to check someone’s immigration status, you will need the following:
- Details of the identity document that was used to apply for settlement, for example, your passport, national identity card, or a Biometric Residence Permit/card
- Your date of birth
- Access to the mobile number or email address used to apply- this will allow you to obtain an access code to enter your account
Once you have all of these items of information, you can follow the clear steps on the government web page to answer the questions provided to find details of your immigration status, or alternatively a share code to other individuals to discover your settled status online.
Proving your right to work or rent
In some instances, you may be required to prove your immigration status as part of a new employer’s check or to rent a property in the UK.
If you wish to display your current status online to employers or a landlord, you can access your share code at GOV.UK, you can also use the platform to print a hard copy of the code. You can use the share code to allow people to check your account.
The share code will remain valid for up to 30 days.
