What are the statistics on UK asylum between 2019 and 2020?

There are many statistics available on UK asylum cases published by the government on a yearly basis.

The statistics outline in detail how many grants of asylum or protection are applied for, issued, granted, or refused.

An interesting statistic to note is the high rate of success of asylum appeals. Approximately 50% of asylum applicants who submit an appeal will be successful in challenging a Home Office decision.

In 2020, the data shows that the top five nationalities applying for asylum in the UK were from Iran, Albania, Eritrea, Iraq, and Sudan.

In 2019, there were 45,537 applications for asylum, and this figure dropped to 35,041 in 2020.

There were over 2,290 applications from unaccompanied asylum seeker children (often referred to as UASC) in 2020.

In terms of the numbers of refugees settled in the UK in 2020, there were 662 people from Syria, 32 from Sudan, 32 from Somalia, 27 from Eritrea, 17 from Iraq, 16 from Afghanistan, and 37 from a number of other countries.
