What are the statistics on UK asylum between 2019 and 2020?
There are many statistics available on UK asylum cases published by the government on a yearly basis.
The statistics outline in detail how many grants of asylum or protection are applied for, issued, granted, or refused.
An interesting statistic to note is the high rate of success of asylum appeals. Approximately 50% of asylum applicants who submit an appeal will be successful in challenging a Home Office decision.
In 2020, the data shows that the top five nationalities applying for asylum in the UK were from Iran, Albania, Eritrea, Iraq, and Sudan.
In 2019, there were 45,537 applications for asylum, and this figure dropped to 35,041 in 2020.
There were over 2,290 applications from unaccompanied asylum seeker children (often referred to as UASC) in 2020.
In terms of the numbers of refugees settled in the UK in 2020, there were 662 people from Syria, 32 from Sudan, 32 from Somalia, 27 from Eritrea, 17 from Iraq, 16 from Afghanistan, and 37 from a number of other countries.

UK asylum statistics 2019
In 2019, there were 19,408 grants of protection issued. These included individuals who were granted leave under the following routes:
- Asylum (12,561)
- Humanitarian protection (1,235)
The additional numbers were met through individuals on a resettlement scheme:
- Mandate scheme (5,612)
- Vulnerable children resettlement (489)
- Gateway protection programme (704)
In addition to these grants of protection, some individuals were also provided with grants of other leave (1,284).
- Discretionary leave (156)
- UASC leave (131)
- Other grants (947)
There is a high rate of refusal for asylum claims in the UK (generally two-thirds of claims are refused).
In 2019, there were 13,495 refused asylum applications. This number came from the following groups:
- Other refusals (10,522)
- Certified refusal (1,372)
- Third country refusal (1,601)
As well as this, there was a total of 3,563 withdrawn applications.
UK asylum statistics 2020
In 2020, almost 30,000 people submitted an application for asylum. In the same year, there were approximately 9,381 grants of protection issued. These came from the following categories:
- Asylum (7,546)
- Humanitarian protection (1,012)
The resettlement schemes were significantly lower in 2020 compared to 2019 because many of them were placed on hold throughout the pandemic.
These schemes made up just 823 cases, including the following forms of resettlement:
- Mandate scheme (5)
- Vulnerable persons resettlement scheme (79)
- Gateway protection programme (77)
Other grants of leave totalled 555 successful applications, including the following:
- Discretionary leave (92)
- UASC leave (65)
- Other grants (398)
In terms of the number of asylum seekers whose applications were refused included the following:
- Asylum cases (9,978)
- Other refusals (5,920)
- Certified refusal (755)
- Third country refusal (3,303)
In addition, there were 2,955 applications withdrawn, made up of the following categories:
- Non-substantiated withdrawal (906)
- Other withdrawal (2,049)
